TRY8.5B Traced in Turkey Betting Probe, 102 Suspects Detained

TRY8.5B Traced in Turkey Betting Probe, 102 Suspects Detained
Turkish gendarmerie detained 102 suspects in a 13-province operation linked to illegal betting and payments. Investigators identified TRY8.5 billion ($172.2 million) in movements through accounts connected to the suspects.

The Interior Ministry announced the raids on October 13. The operation was coordinated from Batman, a province in southeastern Turkey, rather than Osmaniye, where a separate betting investigation was announced two days earlier.

According to Anadolu Agency’s account of the ministry statement, Batman gendarmerie worked with the Batman Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, national organised crime and cybercrime departments, and financial intelligence unit MASAK. Authorities suspect the group of operating illegal betting websites and arranging unlawful money transfers.

Electronic Money and Routing Systems Named

The ministry specifically described technical support for moving and hiding alleged betting proceeds. It referred to electronic-money infrastructure, software systems and financial-routing mechanisms, as reported by DHA.

Investigators also believe the proceeds were brought into the financial system using different methods. No payment-service provider or betting website was named. The announcement did not explain how the routing systems operated or identify the companies behind them.

The TRY8.5 billion figure concerns account activity attributed to the suspects. Officials gave no time period for those movements and did not say how much represented player stakes, repeated transfers or actual proceeds. Nor was TRY8.5 billion reported as a seizure.

Another 59 Detained in Osmaniye

The Osmaniye case was announced on October 11. It involved 59 suspects across eight provinces and TRY7 billion ($141.8 million) in account movements. Authorities also restricted assets worth TRY110 million ($2.2 million), as 15M reported.

Across the two investigations, the figures reach 161 suspects and TRY15.5 billion ($314 million) in account activity. Batman’s total was 21.4% higher than Osmaniye’s. The ministry has not linked the two cases.
