Sports Betting Accounts for 44% of Alberta’s September NAGGR Increase

Sports Betting Accounts for 44% of Alberta’s September NAGGR Increase
Sports and event betting contributed about 44% of the increase in Alberta's regulated iGaming non-adjusted gross gaming revenue (NAGGR) between August and September 2026. Yet betting represented less than one-fifth of the September total.

Sportsbook NAGGR rose by C$5.9 million (US$4.2 million) from August to September, compared with a C$13.3 million (US$9.5 million) increase across all gaming products. Betting therefore supplied 44.4% of the monthly gain, based on rounded AiGC figures and 15M calculations.

Betting Hold Rises From 4.6% to 7.3%

Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) released its first market performance report on October 23. It covers July 13 to September 30, 2026, with a breakdown of wagers, winnings and NAGGR by product.

The sports betting figures for the last two months show the change:

  • August. C$112.2 million (US$80.2 million) wagered; C$5.2 million (US$3.7 million) in NAGGR;
  • September. C$152.7 million (US$109.1 million) wagered; C$11.1 million (US$7.9 million) in NAGGR;
  • Monthly change. Wagers rose 36.1%, against 113.5% growth in sports betting NAGGR.

Dividing NAGGR by wagers puts sportsbook hold at roughly 4.6% in August and 7.3% in September, an increase of 2.6 percentage points. The report does not identify a particular sporting event or other reason for the difference.

AiGC defines NAGGR as wagers minus winnings. Neither wager volume nor NAGGR is the same as net gaming revenue or operator profit.

Casino Still Supplies Four-Fifths of NAGGR

Across all products, Alberta’s commercial market recorded:

  • July 13-31 – C$22.2 million (US$15.9 million) in NAGGR;
  • August – C$43.3 million (US$30.9 million);
  • September – C$56.6 million (US$40.5 million).

That adds up to C$122.1 million (US$87.3 million) over the first 80 calendar days. USD equivalents use the Bank of Canada’s October 23, 2026 rate of C$1.3993 per US$1.

Casino games accounted for 75.6% of September’s NAGGR, with live casino adding another 4.9%. Sports and event betting held the remaining 19.5%.

Combining the two casino segments gives 80.5%, or approximately C$45.6 million (US$32.6 million) in September. That is about 4.1 times the amount generated by sports betting during the same month.

Active Accounts Climb to 388,585

Alberta opened its regulated commercial market with 15 operators on July 13. By September 30, the count had reached 24, AiGC said in its October 23 announcement.

September also brought 388,585 active player accounts, up from 314,091 in August. The 23.7% increase in accounts was below the 30.7% rise in NAGGR.

Average NAGGR per active account moved from C$138 (US$99) in August to C$146 (US$104) in September. Accounts are not unique players: one person may have accounts with several operators.

The operator count is also different from the number of gambling websites. A previous 15M directory check found 48 approved website entries on October 13, after this report’s September cutoff.

At September’s wagering volume, applying August’s 4.6% hold rate would have put sportsbook NAGGR about C$4 million (US$2.9 million) below the reported figure. October’s results will show whether the higher hold rate persists.
