Brazil Betting Firms Warn Clubs of Immediate Sponsorship Exits

Brazil Betting Firms Warn Clubs of Immediate Sponsorship Exits

Brazilian betting operators have started warning football clubs that sponsorship contracts could be terminated immediately if the government prohibits regulated betting. Some Série A teams are already sounding out replacement sponsors.

The notices reached clubs in Brazil’s Série A and Série B on September 24. According to Folha de S.Paulo, operators have also contacted media companies with betting advertising agreements, including Globo, Band and RedeTV.

The companies have not cancelled the contracts yet. They are waiting for the federal government’s final measure.

Corinthians, São Paulo and Fluminense are among the clubs that received warnings, according to UOL.

14 of 20 Série A Clubs Have Betting Brands Up Front

Betting companies currently occupy the main shirt sponsorship position at 14 of Brazil’s 20 Série A clubs. That puts 70% of the league’s teams directly in the sponsorship discussion.

Several of the individual contracts are substantial:

  • Betano × Flamengo – about R$268.5 million ($51.8 million) per year;
  • Esportes da Sorte × Corinthians – R$150 million ($29.0 million) per year;
  • Superbet × São Paulo – R$80 million ($15.4 million) in 2026;
  • Superbet × Fluminense – R$53 million ($10.2 million), potentially rising to R$86 million ($16.6 million).

Dollar conversions use the September 24, 2026 Banco Central do Brasil rate of $1 = R$5.1792.

Some clubs have already begun making initial approaches to other potential sponsors rather than waiting for the government’s decision.

Betting Takes the Main Shirt Space, but About 7% of Club Revenue

The scale looks different when sponsorship is compared with clubs’ entire business. Folha, citing consultancy Convocados, puts betting sponsorship of Série A clubs at about R$1.03 billion ($198.9 million) in 2025, up 66% from R$618 million ($119.3 million) a year earlier.

The same clubs generated R$14.3 billion ($2.76 billion) in total revenue in 2025. That means betting companies supplied about 7.2% of combined club revenue, despite holding the most prominent shirt position at 70% of Série A teams.

Operators Prepare for a Legal Challenge

Operators are also preparing for a legal dispute if the government prohibits the sector. UOL reported that a law firm has already been retained for a potential challenge.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is expected to announce new betting measures in São Paulo on September 25. Brazilian media report that a full prohibition has been under consideration, but no provisional measure had been published when the clubs received the sponsorship notices.

If only online casino products are restricted, operators expect existing agreements to require renegotiation rather than automatic termination.
