Rockstar Shuts GTA Online Casino Floor to Australian Players
Australian players began reporting on July 28 that the casino games and Lucky Wheel were no longer available. Rockstar-focused dataminer Tez2 later shared a code change showing that Australia had been added to a geographic gambling restriction.
Access Ends After Years of Play
The block extends to blackjack, roulette, Three Card Poker, slot machines, and Inside Track horse racing. Additionally, the Lucky Wheel is blocked even though it provides one free daily spin rather than requiring a casino chip wager.
Diamond Casino remains accessible for Australian players, according to player feedback, but they are unable to participate in the games offered there. The change eliminates content that has been available since the casino launched in 2019. Because of that late removal, the timing of the decision looks rather unusual.
No official statement from Rockstar regarding the matter has been released.
Virtual Chips Meet Australian Rules
Real money payouts of winnings are not available. Players are using chips in GTA Online, and chips cannot be withdrawn or exchanged for cash.
There is a connection between the system and real currency, however. Players can purchase GTA$ through Shark Cards, and GTA$ can generally be exchanged for casino chips. Rockstar applies additional restrictions to that conversion in some markets. This connection has kept the casino feature within wider debates over gambling mechanics and paid currency in video games.
Australia changed its classification rules on September 22, 2024. Games containing simulated gambling now receive a minimum R 18+ rating. Titles with chance-based in-game purchases, including paid loot boxes, receive at least an M rating. Games classified before that date are not automatically reassessed unless their classification is revoked or later changes require a new decision.
Those rules do not establish that an Australian authority ordered Rockstar to remove the casino features. GTA V already carries an R 18+ classification in Australia, and no public enforcement notice relating to this restriction has been identified.
A Wider Regional Compliance Pattern
Geographic controls have been employed by Rockstar in the past. When the Diamond Casino launched in 2019, its gambling features were already unavailable in several jurisdictions subject to geographic restrictions.
It seems that Australia has become one of those countries after several years of availability. Some players have also reported losing access to poker in Red Dead Online, although Rockstar has not confirmed a separate restriction for that game.
The unexplained block demonstrates how simple it is for a game feature to become a compliance problem in this or that region. The use of cash payments is not even necessary for scrutiny to arise. Virtual chips, purchasable currency, and interactive casino games may still become blocked on the publisher side even before there is a public enforcement case.
