Premier League Openers Add About 23% to UK Gambling Search Demand
UK gambling search demand has climbed sharply at the start of each Premier League season tracked by Blask since 2021/22. The opening-day effect has stayed consistent, while the final Sunday has become much weaker.

Blask’s five-season dataset shows a clear split between the beginning and end of the Premier League calendar. For the season finale, the company compared the final Sunday with the Sunday one week earlier. That avoids using the preceding Saturday, which normally carries stronger gambling activity regardless of whether a title race is being decided.

Final-Day Boost Has Dropped to Around 5%

The final-day increase reached 20.4% in 2022/23. It then fell to 11.5% in 2023/24, 4.3% in 2024/25, and 5.1% in 2025/26. The first season in the dataset, 2021/22, produced a 15.2% rise.

The pattern shows that the final round still attracts extra search interest. However, the size of the increase is now well below its earlier peak.

Opening Friday Delivers a Much Steadier Jump

The first match of the season produced a narrower range. Blask compared the Thursday before each campaign with the Friday on which the opening fixture was played.

Across the five seasons from 2021/22 through 2025/26, the changes were:

  • 2021/22 – +21.8%;
  • 2022/23 – +26.0%;
  • 2023/24 – +21.2%;
  • 2024/25 – +25.6%;
  • 2025/26 – +22.5%.

The average increase was 23.4%. None of the five opening Fridays fell outside a 21.2% to 26.0% range.

This comparison also reduces the effect of the calendar itself. Both days fall inside the working week, so the result is less influenced by the usual difference between weekday and weekend gambling activity.

Blask Index figures measure online search demand across gambling categories. They do not represent betting turnover, gross gaming revenue, or the number of wagers placed.

Grand National Still Produces the Larger Single-Day Spike

Premier League kickoff is consistent, but it is not the largest short-term demand event in Blask’s UK data. The company recorded a 93.0% day-over-day increase around the Grand National in 2024 and 78.8% in 2025. Entain data reported by the Racing Post also ranked the Grand National as the company’s most-bet-on sporting event of 2025.

The difference is in frequency. The Grand National is a single annual race. The Premier League opener, by contrast, has produced a similar demand increase across five consecutive seasons.

Opening Friday Offers the More Stable Pattern

Five seasons of data make the opening Friday the more stable of the two Premier League markers tracked by Blask. The final day has become less dependable, with its search lift falling to about 5% in the two latest completed seasons. Premier League football still produces a visible rise in gambling interest at both ends of the calendar, but the stronger pattern is now concentrated at the start of the season.
