Michigan Senator Pushes Social Wagering Bill

Michigan Senator Pushes Social Wagering Bill
Senator Veronica Klinefelt introduced Senate Bill 511 to legalize small-scale betting between friends in Michigan

Legislative Support and Review

Klinefelt, a Democrat from Eastpointe, is joined by Senators Sue Shink, Jonathan Lindsey, and Joseph Bellino, giving the bill bipartisan backing. The Committee on Regulatory Affairs is currently reviewing the legislation to determine whether it will advance.

Why Michigan Needs This Legal Change

Social betting like office pools, March Madness brackets, and Super Bowl squares are widespread but technically illegal under current Michigan law. Klinefelt says SB 511 simply legalizes “what everybody does all the time” without profit or commercial involvement.

Key Provisions of SB 511

  • Allows social wagering contests like betting pools and sports squares between friends.
  • Groups limited to 100 participants maximum.
  • Individual bets capped at $25 per person.
  • Commercial sportsbooks and casinos cannot host these contests.
  • Bets must be “incidental to a bona fide social relationship” with no house take or additional prizes beyond the wagers.

Impact on Michigan Gambling Rules

The bill also adjusts penalties for illegal gambling, replacing fines ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. Commercial sportsbooks remain unaffected and continue under existing regulations. SB 511 now awaits committee action before potentially moving to a full Senate vote.
