Independiente distances itself from underage betting probe
Argentine club says Sportsbet link limited to sponsorship deal

Club Atlético Independiente moved quickly to separate itself from an ongoing criminal probe. Prosecutors in Greater Buenos Aires are examining alleged illegal betting activities targeting minors, with operations running under the Sportsbet name.

The football club confirmed Sportsbet appears on its commercial sponsor list. But Independiente stressed it hasn’t received any formal notification about legal action against the organisation itself.

The investigation centres on Matías Gabriel Garcilazo, a social media influencer who also works as an Airport Security Police officer. He’s accused of running a criminal network that recruited underage players through Instagram and YouTube. Nine people have been arrested so far, facing more than 60 charges combined.

Why Social Media Recruitment Triggered the Probe

Authorities focused on how the alleged operation used multiple platforms to reach young people. The network promoted betting lines through Telegram and WhatsApp channels after making initial contact on more visible social networks.

Investigators say cashiers were employed to resell betting chips specifically to players under 18. This targeted approach to minors raised red flags during the initial review.

Digital evidence will likely determine how much promotional content actually reached underage audiences. And prosecutors are examining seized devices and accounts to trace the full scope of the operation’s marketing activities.

What Authorities Found During Searches

Police conducted searches and seized electronic devices along with cash during the coordinated raids. The case file shows investigators are reviewing accounts allegedly used to process wagers and payments.

Local media reports indicate the probe started after complaints about unlicensed betting promotions aimed at teenagers. No charges have been filed against Independiente itself at this stage.

The club stated its connection to the brand involves only a standard sponsorship contract. Independiente said it doesn’t oversee or control any third-party marketing that happens outside club-owned channels and assets.

Club officials added they follow all applicable advertising rules. They’ll cooperate with authorities if asked, according to the statement.

How This Affects Independiente’s Sponsorship Decisions

The club plans to wait for formal updates from judicial authorities before taking any action. Independiente said it will review contractual measures if new facts come out during the investigation.

This puts Argentine clubs in a tricky spot with betting sponsors. Many teams rely on gambling companies for significant revenue, but regulatory scrutiny around youth protection continues to increase.

The case highlights risks clubs face when sponsors operate in unclear legal territory. Independiente’s quick response suggests teams are becoming more cautious about maintaining distance from potential compliance issues.

Results will depend on what digital forensics reveals about the operation’s actual reach to minors.
