Flutter’s UK&I Job Cuts Could Reach 15.6% of Workforce

Flutter’s UK&I Job Cuts Could Reach 15.6% of Workforce
Up to 1,400 jobs are at risk at Flutter Entertainment, the group behind Paddy Power, Sky Bet and Betfair. Employees began receiving notifications on October 20, with the cuts extending to offices in four European countries.

The new SEC filing comes after a major increase in UK gambling taxes. Flutter expects to spend $80 million to $90 million on the restructuring before the end of 2026.

Up to 15.6% of UK and Ireland Staff Could Go

Flutter employs around 9,000 people in its UK and Ireland division. Cutting the full 1,400 positions would remove 15.6% of that workforce, based on 15M’s calculation.

The affected locations include:

  • Leeds, UK;
  • Dublin, Ireland;
  • Porto, Portugal;
  • Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

The two overseas hubs support Flutter’s UK and Ireland operations. The company has not disclosed how many jobs are at risk in each city.

According to the October 20 SEC filing, the $80 million to $90 million estimate mainly covers severance, employee benefits and related expenses. Most of the work should be finished this year, although the final number of redundancies will depend on employee consultations.

Those expenses are not a new addition to Flutter’s financial guidance. The company had already included them in the updated figures issued alongside its second-quarter results.

UK Betting Tax Is Set to Rise Again in April

Under the UK’s revised gambling tax rules, Remote Gaming Duty increased from 21% to 40% in April 2026. Online betting operators face another change next April, when the rate on most sports bets, excluding horse racing, will climb from 15% to 25%.

Flutter UK and Ireland chief executive Kevin Harrington said the company could not absorb tax increases of this size without reducing its fixed costs.

The group had warned about the consequences of the tax changes before announcing the layoffs. Now it is moving ahead with cuts while keeping investment in customer products among its priorities.

In its October 20 announcement, Flutter said it expects that spending to help defend its market position. No separate estimate was provided for savings from the job reductions alone.

$339M of Flutter’s 2027 Tax Impact Remains

The job cuts form part of a cost-saving programme Flutter had already outlined to investors. Its earlier forecast put the 2027 adjusted EBITDA impact of the UK tax changes at $540 million. First-round measures were expected to offset $201 million of that amount.

That gives the following breakdown:

  • $540 million – projected EBITDA impact before mitigation;
  • $201 million – expected offset from initial measures;
  • 37.2% – share of the impact covered by those measures;
  • $339 million – remaining impact before further mitigation.

The $339 million figure is the difference between the company’s two published estimates. It does not represent a new forecast from Flutter. Nor can the announced layoffs be counted as another saving on top of the $201 million. Flutter has placed the restructuring within those initial measures.

Bottom Line

Flutter is making these cuts months before the next UK betting tax increase takes effect in April 2027. The company has not quantified how much of the remaining EBITDA impact it expects to offset through further measures.
