Brett Summerer officially became Accel Entertainment’s new CFO on September 22, taking over from Mark Phelan, who had been juggling dual roles as acting CFO and President of US Gaming. The company thanked Phelan for stepping into the temporary CFO position and making “significant contributions” during his short tenure handling both responsibilities.
Why Accel Chose Summerer for the Role
CEO Andy Rubenstein highlighted Summerer’s background in regulated industries when explaining the appointment. “Brett is an accomplished finance leader who brings extensive operational and financial discipline as well as experience in regulated industries,” Rubenstein said. The timing aligns well with Accel’s growth trajectory, especially after the company just posted record Q2 2025 revenue of $335.9 million, an 8.6% increase from the prior year period. Rubenstein noted Summerer’s “proven record of driving sustainable growth across diverse industries and business models,” which fits perfectly with Accel’s expansion plans.
What Summerer Will Handle at Accel
Beyond traditional CFO responsibilities like internal and external financial reporting, internal audit, and compliance functions, Summerer’s role extends into strategic territory. He’ll oversee investor relations, treasury operations, and capital markets functions while taking a “prominent role” in strategic planning and business development. The M&A component of his responsibilities signals that Accel isn’t slowing down its acquisition activity, particularly as the company continues expanding into new gaming markets.
How This Appointment Shapes Accel’s Future
Summerer expressed enthusiasm about what he called “a compelling opportunity,” noting that Accel has built “a unique and resilient business model at the forefront of local gaming as a trusted partner of small businesses and local communities.” His experience completing dozens of transactions at Verano suggests Accel may accelerate its expansion efforts, especially given the company’s strong financial performance and position as one of the largest distributed gaming operators nationally. “I am excited to join Andy, Mark and the leadership team, as well as the entire Accel organisation, as we work together to advance the Company’s strategy, enhance operational excellence and support value creation for shareholders,” Summerer said, stressing the collaborative approach he’ll bring to scaling operations and strengthening the financial platform.
