How to Build Teams That Truly Own Their Outcomes

3 season • Episode 22

From Tasks to Shared Responsibility

Development teams often complete individual tasks yet miss critical goals because no one helps colleagues overcome blockers. This gap between task completion and true impact separates adequate teams from exceptional performers.

Linda Stupena, an expert in development team dynamics, explains how cultivating shared ownership moves teams from simply working together to collectively delivering value.

What Defines True Team Ownership

The fundamental difference lies in what teams optimize for. Stupena contrasts teams focused on individual task completion versus those united around shared outcomes.

“In one scenario, four developers finish their tickets but the sprint goal fails because the critical task had blockers,” Stupena says. “They were so focused on their tasks that they didn’t help with the most important one.”

True teams prioritize collective impact. “They helped the person delivering the main value. Even though other tasks weren’t completed, they delivered the most important impact.”

Building the Foundation for Collective Success

Shared ownership requires proper tools and autonomy. “Teams need all necessary tools and skills to deliver from initiation to rollout,” Stupena emphasizes.

She uses a football analogy: kicking the ball perfectly matters less than placing it where teammates can continue the play. Shared ownership means enabling others, not just completing your work.

Navigating Challenges and Recognizing Warning Signs

When priorities shift, leadership communication determines motivation. Stupena advises explaining business context clearly rather than expressing frustration.

Warning signs include silence, finger-pointing, and disappearing camaraderie. “From empowerment to silence—issues exist but nobody speaks up,” Stupena notes.

The Path to Empowering Accountability

Ultimately, accountability should spring from care, not fear. When teams feel trusted, ownership becomes a catalyst for innovation and exceptional performance.
