Navigating the New SEO Reality
An SEO expert recently captured the industry's frustration: "Google is becoming selective. Create quality and be patient if your website is not ranking right away... it could take years."
Ivana Flynn, an SEO consultant specializing in challenging niches like iGaming, returned to a webinar to decode Google's trajectory. She argues that the search giant's core updates are systematically favoring established authority and punishing quick fixes, forcing a fundamental shift from short-term tactics to long-term, technically-sound brand building.
The Aftermath of the Core Update
The June 2025 core update delivered a clear message: complacency is no longer an option. Even white-hat affiliates who followed the rules saw significant traffic drops, primarily due to a neglected fundamental—content decay.
“The biggest thing was that affiliation in iGaming massively lost traffic,” Flynn states. The “it’s working, let’s not touch it” mentality is a critical vulnerability. “Just because it was working in 2023 and 2024 doesn’t mean it’s going to work in 2027.” Her first lesson is relentless content refreshment: update bonuses, add listicles, and change meta titles to align with how people search today.
Simultaneously, the update revealed Google’s contradictory push towards “Parasite SEO”—hijacking high-authority domains—because they possess the historical data, links, and returning traffic that Google’s algorithms easily measure and reward.
CTR Manipulation and Viral Traffic
In a desperate attempt to regain visibility, many turn to manipulative tactics. However, Flynn warns that Google’s algorithms have evolved to detect and penalize these with precision.
“They changed their algorithm to find this out and there is a prediction what the CTR should be. And if it’s not matching it by a massive number, then you’re probably manipulating,” she explains. This has led to penalties for major iGaming brands. Similarly, viral traffic manipulation, once a magic bullet, has lost its potency. “Now as everybody’s doing it, it has no effect,” she notes, rendering the risk worthless. The only viable path is patience.
Google’s Grand Plan
Despite the chaos, a pattern emerges from Google’s updates. The company is engaged in a constant battle to clean up its search results, but its own criteria for “quality” are creating unintended consequences.
“One third of the Google algo is basically fighting spam,” Flynn says, referencing the Google leaks. However, its reliance on easy-to-measure metrics like domain age and link volume means that clever Parasite SEO—which uses established, reputable domains to host iGaming content—often passes the test. This creates a frustrating experience for users and is causing Google to slowly lose market share to competitors like Bing and ChatGPT.
The underlying trend is selectivity. With billions of websites and a finite crawl budget, Google is becoming more selective about what it indexes and ranks. “You just simply need to build up the authority and make Google trust you,” Flynn advises.
Rethinking Visibility for a New Ecosystem
The rise of AI overviews is fundamentally changing the click-through economy, forcing SEOs to optimize for a new type of visibility: being cited as a source.
“AI is a massive jinx word… it’s as well biting into our traffic,” Flynn observes. To rank in AI overviews, the strategy diverges from traditional SEO. It requires:
- Conversational Content: Structured in listicles and bullet points for easy extraction.
- Brand Mentions: Ensuring your brand name is mentioned across the web, even without a follow link.
- Image Optimization: Images are now a critical entry point for AI discovery.
A Dual-Platform Approach: Building separate assets optimized for Google’s strict spam filters and Bing’s more permissive environment (which feeds ChatGPT).
“The key is to think outside of the box,” Flynn recommends. “I search for something in Google AI overviews… see what’s cited as a source… and I would like to get an article there.”
Technical SEO
Amidst these high-level strategies, Flynn underscores that success is impossible without a rock-solid technical foundation. This is the unglamorous, essential work that cannot be skipped.
“Technical [SEO] is always a must,” she asserts. Professionals must understand server codes, caching, and how to make JavaScript-heavy iGaming sites readable for bots via pre-rendering. “Without technical SEO, you don’t get anywhere… Don’t overcomplicate things.”
The path forward requires resilience and a long-term perspective. SEO professionals must accept that Google provides no clear answers, and recovery is a marathon. The winners will be those who invest in their brand’s technical integrity and authoritative presence across the entire search ecosystem, patiently building trust in an increasingly selective digital world.
