Oregon Lottery rolled out Beaver State Bonus Bonanza last month. Light & Wonder built the title specifically for Oregon players after more than a year of development work.
The game sits in nearly 2,000 video lottery locations across the state. An animated beaver character hosts the action. Symbols include Chanterelle mushrooms, Chinook salmon, Multnomah Falls, and the golden pioneer statue from the Capitol building.
Light & Wonder’s development team actually visited Oregon during the design phase. They studied the state’s landmarks and natural features firsthand.
Why Oregon Wanted Regionally Tailored Content
Generic slot games don’t connect with players the same way localised content does. Oregon Lottery wanted something that felt authentically local.
“It was important to make sure no detail was out of place for Oregonians,” said Shad Barnes, Oregon Lottery’s Senior Manager of Digital Marketing. “We wanted it to be as authentically Oregon as possible, with details like our trees, wildlife and landmarks to feel like home.”
The approach reflects a wider shift among lottery operators. Regional themes help differentiate products in competitive markets.
Early performance numbers show players responded well to the Oregon-specific design. The game’s doing better than many standard titles in the lottery’s video portfolio.
What Makes This Game Different
Beaver State Bonus Bonanza features exclusively Oregon imagery. No generic mountains or generic wildlife here.
The development process took over a year. That’s longer than typical video lottery titles. Light & Wonder worked closely with Oregon Lottery’s internal team throughout.
The supplier’s designers studied Oregon’s landscape, architecture, and cultural touchstones. They built visual elements around what makes the state recognisable to residents.
The game launched at the end of September. It’s now available statewide at video lottery retailers.
How Custom Content Changes Lottery Strategy
This partnership shows how suppliers and operators can work together on market-specific products. Light & Wonder adapted its platform to Oregon’s requirements rather than offering a standard title.
“We are proud to collaborate with the Oregon Lottery on Beaver State Bonus Bonanza, a title developed exclusively with Oregon players in mind,” said Dirk Geere, VP of Product Management at Light & Wonder. “By working closely to reflect the state’s unique identity, we’ve delivered a custom experience that is already resonating strongly across the market.”
Other lotteries will probably watch how this performs. Custom regional content costs more to develop. But it might pay off through stronger player connection and better retention.
The video lottery segment generates significant revenue for Oregon. Games that feel local could help maintain player interest as competition increases from other gambling options.
