MERKUR Casino UK has snapped up The Casino MK in Milton Keynes after Aspers went into administration and shuttered the venue back in April. The site’s tucked inside the Xscape leisure complex at Marlborough Gate, and it’ll become MERKUR’s second UK casino following their Aberdeen opening in 2023.
Mark Schertle, who runs MERKUR Casino UK as chief operating officer, is handling the Milton Keynes relaunch. Interestingly, the company’s UK headquarters are also based in Milton Keynes – so this acquisition hits close to home for them.
Why MERKUR Sees UK Growth Potential
This deal’s part of MERKUR’s wider UK expansion strategy, and Schertle thinks there’s genuine room for casino growth across the country. “Our experience in Aberdeen has shown there is a strong appetite for the kind of experience we deliver,” he said, pointing to their successful Scottish venue as proof the formula works.
But it’s not just about gaming – MERKUR’s betting on regional leisure economies and job creation. They’re specifically offering opportunities to former Aspers employees, which should help with local relationships and getting operational quickly.
What the Reopened Venue Will Offer
The casino will feature all the usual suspects when it reopens in the coming months – blackjack, poker, roulette and modern slot machines. MERKUR’s planning significant upgrades to bring everything up to their operational standards, though they haven’t detailed exactly what that means yet.
Schertle described their approach as “a blend of premium gaming, hospitality, and entertainment” – basically the same formula they’ve used in Aberdeen. The venue “has played a significant role in the local leisure and entertainment market,” he noted, suggesting they want to restore rather than reinvent its position.
How This Changes UK Casino Landscape
This acquisition prevents another permanent casino closure, which matters more than it might seem – when major operators exit regional markets, venues often stay dark permanently. Milton Keynes gets its casino back plus new local jobs, while MERKUR demonstrates that well-funded operators can still see opportunity in UK retail gaming.
The timing’s interesting too. While everyone talks about online gaming growth, MERKUR’s doubling down on physical locations and proving there’s still money in land-based venues when they’re run properly.
“Our aim is to get the casino open again as quickly and smoothly as possible,” Schertle said – suggesting a reopening timeline of months rather than years, which should please both former employees and local punters who’ve been without their regular gaming spot since April.
