Flutter appoints Imperial Brands CEO as director

Stefan Bomhard joins board October 1 after leaving current role

Flutter Entertainment has named Stefan Bomhard, the outgoing CEO of Imperial Brands plc, as a new non-executive director. He will step down from Imperial on September 30 and officially take his seat on Flutter’s board the following day. Under New York Stock Exchange rules, Bomhard qualifies as an independent director — a key requirement for governance compliance.

Why Flutter Wanted This Specific Executive

Bomhard brings decades of leadership across international consumer industries. Before Imperial Brands, he was CEO at Inchcape PLC and previously held senior roles at Bacardi, Cadbury, and Diageo. His career also spans Unilever Food Solutions Europe and Procter & Gamble. This global consumer brand expertise is exactly what Flutter wanted, according to Chair John Bryant, who said the appointment followed an “extensive search.”

Marketing was a particular draw. Flutter operates gambling brands across multiple jurisdictions and competes heavily for customer acquisition and retention. Bomhard’s consumer-focused experience offers a fresh perspective outside the traditional gambling talent pool.

What Changes With This Appointment

The timing is sharp — Bomhard leaves Imperial Brands September 30, joins Flutter October 1, and will also exit Compass Group’s board by year-end. Flutter gains a seasoned executive who has managed listed companies and overseen multinational operations. His independence and external viewpoint are expected to strengthen board oversight while broadening strategic thinking.

How This Affects Flutter’s Direction

Chair John Bryant said Bomhard is expected to contribute meaningfully to Flutter’s long-term direction, not just participate in board formalities. His track record in global brand building and marketing could shape how Flutter positions its products in new and existing markets. The move signals Flutter’s intent to diversify its leadership with perspectives from beyond gambling, bringing in expertise from other consumer sectors to support international expansion.
