Brazilian Operator Rebrands Montecarlosbet to Play

Sistema Lotérico de Pernambuco gets regulatory approval for name change affecting one of its three licensed brands

Sistema Lotérico de Pernambuco has received approval to rebrand Montecarlosbet as “Play.” The authorization came through Portaria No. 2.007/2025, published in the National Official Union Diary. The operator, one of 77 licensed companies in Brazil, runs three brands in the regulated market. The rebrand impacts only Montecarlosbet, while MCGames and Montecarlos continue unchanged.

Why This Change Matters for Brazilian Gaming

Brazil’s regulated market currently covers 180 brands under 79 licenses. Most companies (74) operate under Ministry of Finance authorization, while five continue under Federal Court rulings. The rebrand demonstrates Brazil’s strict oversight, where even branding changes require regulatory clearance. Sistema Lotérico de Pernambuco remains fully operational with its other brands unaffected.

What the Approval Process Involved

The SPA officially authorized the Montecarlosbet-to-Play rebrand in September. Brazil mandates regulatory sign-off for all operator name changes, ensuring compliance before implementation. The change affects only branding; licensing terms and operational scope remain intact. MCGames and Montecarlos continue under their original names.

How Brazil’s Regulatory Framework Is Expanding

Brazil’s gaming oversight is tightening further. Authorities are developing a unified self-exclusion system for players across all licensed platforms. An interministerial group is also drafting national policies against match-fixing, while the SPA signed an agreement with Conar, Brazil’s advertising self-regulation council. These initiatives highlight the government’s push for stricter control of the betting and online gaming sector, requiring operators to secure formal approval for all major changes.
