BetMGM Targets Growth in Missouri and Upcoming Alberta Market

BetMGM Targets Growth in Missouri and Upcoming Alberta Market
BetMGM is strengthening its presence in the North American market through its expansion into Missouri and its preparations for the launch in Alberta.

The expansion occurs through two strategic actions. The first one is the sportsbook launch in Missouri, while the second one is the preparations for the Alberta market. Both actions are BetMGM’s efforts to seize the opportunities that arise with the new legal gambling markets.

Early Brand Exposure in Missouri

BetMGM’s sportsbook was introduced in Missouri in December 2025, although the company had started building its presence in the state before that. In 2022, it became the official sports betting partner of the Kansas City Chiefs, which boosted its visibility among locals. The Chiefs, by the way, won consecutive Super Bowls almost immediately after the partnership began. That kept both the team and its sponsors in the news, and by the time Missouri legalized betting, locals were already familiar with BetMGM.

Geography is where another advantage lies. The state’s largest cities (including Kansas City and St. Louis) lie close to Kansas and Illinois, where regulated betting already exists. This could have helped expose local players to the brand before the state market opened.

On the operator side, there was a pre-registration campaign with greater bonuses for early adopters before the sportsbook launch. Once it went live, players from certain states saw promos that boosted potential wins and bet insurance deals for losing the first wager.

The financial results announced by MGM Resorts in February 2026 looked compelling. In particular, BetMGM reported a 33% increase in revenue, a shift to positive EBITDA, and a 77% rise in revenue per user.

Alberta Moves Toward Ontario-Like Regulation

BetMGM is preparing for expansion in Canada as Alberta plans to introduce a regulated iGaming market allowing licensed private operators. The proposal is built around a model similar to that implemented in Ontario in 2022. Under this framework, the province ended its government-run monopoly and opened the market to private companies.

By adopting Ontario’s approach, Alberta policymakers hope to move betting activity from offshore platforms to licensed ones. At the same time, taxation and consumer protection measures are assumed to be introduced.

The new market is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2026, and operators like BetMGM have already begun preparations. Pre-registration lists for potential users are already open.

Albertans could potentially have access to regulated betting sites before major events like the NHL playoffs and the upcoming CFL season start. The case of BetMGM in Missouri has already demonstrated the importance of the right timing.

What This Means for the Market

As seen from the expansion plans of BetMGM, operators are willing to capitalize on the opportunities that new regulated markets could offer. Early partnerships and pre-registration promos are among the activities that help secure visibility before the launch. Long-term impact, however, will depend on how quickly the emerging markets evolve.
