BetMGM and Casino del Mar opened their first satellite sportsbook at Mayagüez Resort and Casino. The move pushes their three-year partnership beyond the capital.
Rolando Padua leads Paulson Puerto Rico as president. He wants to copy the San Juan venue’s success across different parts of the island.
Casino del Mar operates at La Concha Resort in San Juan. The partnership made BetMGM one of the top regulated sportsbook operators in Puerto Rico’s market.
Why This Expansion Matters for the Territory
Puerto Rico’s betting market is heating up. The San Juan location proved strong demand exists for regulated sports betting outside just the capital city.
Padua said the goal is letting Puerto Ricans in multiple areas “enjoy the same high-quality entertainment experience” available in San Juan. More locations mean better access to legal betting.
Casino del Mar frames this as economic development through gaming. Each expansion brings jobs and regulated betting options to regions that didn’t have them before.
The territory’s sports betting scene is growing fast with three major operators now competing.
What the Partnership Is Building
Mayagüez is just the beginning. More satellite sportsbooks will open in coming months at locations across Puerto Rico.
The Puerto Rico Gaming Commission provides the regulatory framework. It covers both retail sportsbooks and online betting operations throughout the territory.
But BetMGM faces real competition. FanDuel launched a retail sportsbook in San Juan earlier this year through its partnership with CAGE Puerto Rico II.
That made Puerto Rico the 24th US state or territory where FanDuel offers mobile sports betting. The operator’s expanding its footprint here too.
PrizePicks secured a local gaming license recently. They’re the first daily fantasy sports operator authorised to run on the island. Their Arena platform rolls out in the next few months.
How Puerto Rico’s Betting Scene Is Changing
The territory’s becoming a genuinely competitive sports betting market. Three major operators are active or expanding right now.
BetMGM’s satellite strategy puts physical sportsbooks in different regions. It’s a different approach from concentrating everything in San Juan like some competitors do.
The regulatory setup supports both retail and digital growth. That’s what’s attracting more operators to set up shop in Puerto Rico.
Casino del Mar isn’t just hosting sportsbooks. They’re positioning themselves as a key driver of regulated gaming expansion across the island. Their network strategy could pressure other operators to follow suit.
The next few months show how many satellite locations BetMGM can actually open. Each spot tests whether demand exists outside the main tourist zones.
