Swedish gaming companies showed varied results during Q2 2025. The market generated SEK7.02 billion ($744 million) in total revenue.
This represents a 1.9% jump compared to the same three months in 2024. The figure also exceeded Q1 2025 results by 5.9%.
Online commercial gaming dominated with SEK4.63 billion in earnings. This includes digital casino products and sports wagering. The category gained 1.4% despite facing difficult year-over-year comparisons from Euro 2024’s initial phase.
State lottery operations and physical slot machines delivered the strongest gains. These activities produced SEK1.42 billion, surging 10.2% from the previous year.
Why certain gambling segments faced headwinds
Not all gaming categories shared in the positive momentum. Public benefit gaming revenue fell 5.3% to SEK846 million.
However, bingo activities within this classification held steady at SEK49 million. Physical commercial gaming venues, such as restaurant-based casinos, contributed SEK63 million.
Casino Cosmopol’s final location generated only SEK8 million before shuttering in April. Svenska Spel closed this remaining brick-and-mortar casino earlier than required.
Sweden’s parliament approved a complete ban on physical casino operations. This restriction takes effect on January 1, 2026.
What regulatory shifts reshaped the industry
Svenska Spel had permission to operate Casino Cosmopol through December 2025. However, they chose to close several months ahead of the deadline after receiving revised ownership directives from Stockholm.
This closure ended Sweden’s era of land-based casino gaming. The decision reflects wider regulatory transformations occurring throughout the sector.
Spelinspektionen also revealed significant administrative changes. Director General Camilla Rosenberg plans to leave her position on October 31.
She’s served in this role since 2017. Her tenure spans almost the complete duration of Sweden’s competitive gambling framework.
How the leadership change impacts oversight
Rosenberg’s exit occurs during a pivotal period for Swedish gaming regulation. She will transition to directing the Swedish Real Estate Agents’ Inspection Authority.
“I would like to thank Camilla for her meritorious work at Spelinspektionen during a time of profound changes in the gambling market,” stated Chairman Claes Norgren.
He continued: “I congratulate her on her new position.”
The regulatory body maintains operational stability during this transition phase. “Operations will continue as planned and at an unabated pace while waiting for a new director general to be appointed,” Norgren explained.
Rosenberg oversaw Sweden’s transformation from monopoly-based gaming to open market competition. The incoming director general will manage the casino prohibition rollout and continuing industry developments.
