FanDuel pays $5m to settle Jaguars fraud case
The sportsbook reached an agreement over stolen funds that former team employee Amit Patel deposited into gambling accounts

FanDuel agreed to a $5 million settlement with the Jacksonville Jaguars, resolving a dispute over money stolen by former financial manager Amit Patel. Between 2019 and 2023, Patel embezzled $22 million, with nearly $20 million ending up in FanDuel accounts. Patel is currently serving six and a half years in federal prison in South Carolina after pleading guilty last year.

Why This Case Matters for Sports Betting

The case raised concerns because FanDuel is an official NFL gambling partner. Patel, an NFL employee, was prohibited from betting, yet used stolen team funds to gamble. This situation highlighted potential weaknesses in FanDuel’s monitoring systems, as millions in stolen deposits went unnoticed. Patel also filed a $250 million lawsuit against FanDuel in October, claiming the sportsbook failed to enforce responsible gambling safeguards.

How Patel Stole Millions

Court records show Patel manipulated team finances, inflating charges for catering, travel, and lodging while creating fake transactions that appeared legitimate. His access to the virtual credit card system enabled the theft, which was eventually uncovered in February 2023 after one of his bets triggered NFL scrutiny.

Impact of the Settlement

The $5 million settlement allows both parties to avoid prolonged litigation without admitting liability. The Jaguars continue pursuing Patel separately for over $66 million. Following this case, FanDuel appointed Keith Whyte as Responsible Gaming Strategic Advisor in early September, indicating a renewed focus on compliance. The incident exposes gaps in sportsbook monitoring of large deposits and suspicious activity, prompting other operators to review their systems. The settlement represents about 25% of the funds Patel deposited at FanDuel, reflecting the sportsbook’s desire to limit its exposure.
