Betway Africa CEO Michel steps into Chairman role

Betway Africa CEO Michel steps into Chairman role
After nearly 25 years, Laurence Michel exits the CEO position but stays with the company

Laurence Michel is leaving his CEO position at Betway Africa after 24-and-a-half years. He’s not going far, though. Michel will take up the Chairman role instead while remaining part of Super Group’s executive team.

The company hasn’t named his replacement yet. A search is underway.

Michel’s tenure covered a massive shift in African gambling. He led Betway’s operations through the continent’s digital transformation and helped navigate the company through Super Group’s 2022 IPO.

Why This Transition Matters Now

Michel’s timing reflects South Africa’s current regulatory changes. He mentioned this himself in his LinkedIn announcement.

“In this new capacity, my focus will include navigating the evolving regulatory landscape during this pivotal period for the South African gambling sector,” Michel wrote.

The shift happens as Betway deals with fresh challenges. Just this month, the Advertising Standards Agency pulled the company’s Lewis Hamilton campaign. The ASA called it “irresponsible.”

But Betway’s also been expanding. Last year saw a new Playtech partnership bring fresh gaming options to South African players.

What Michel Achieved During His Run

Twenty-four years is a long time in any role. Michel oversaw Betway Africa’s entire modern evolution.

He guided the business from traditional operations into today’s digital market. The company grew across multiple African markets under his watch, and he brought Betway through Super Group’s public listing without major issues.

Earlier in 2025, the company signed Thierry Henry as a Global Ambassador. Michel was still CEO when that deal closed.

His LinkedIn post reflected on the experience. “This journey has been the privilege of a lifetime, and I am deeply grateful to our exceptional team, partners and stakeholders who have made this success possible,” he said.

How Betway Moves Forward

Michel’s Chairman role keeps him involved in strategy. He’ll work on long-term growth plans and innovation projects.

The CEO search presents an interesting question. Will Betway promote internally or bring in outside leadership? The company hasn’t indicated either way.

Michel stays connected to Super Group’s executive operations. That gives Betway Africa continuity even with a new CEO coming.

The regulatory environment in South Africa will test whoever takes the role. Michel specifically highlighted this as a priority area for his Chairman position. Recent advertising trouble with the ASA shows how carefully operators need to move.

Betway’s partnerships continue to expand its market position. The Playtech deal brought new game content. The Henry signing strengthened brand presence. A new CEO will inherit strong foundations but also significant regulatory scrutiny.
